STARDUST COLLECTOR comprises a series of large bronze plates, suspended from ceiling to floor to create a ‘corridor’ around which viewers can walk. Each plate has a Geiger Counter placed close to it. The Geiger Counters detect cosmic ray particles as they pass through the room, and each detector switches a tiny trigger which strikes a plate to produce a resonant metallic sound. Behind each plate is a microphone which amplifies the striking of the bronze plates ‘live’. The combination of vibrating plates creates a deep sound texture which fills the room and surrounds the viewer, alluding to deep space and the journey a cosmic ray might make, collecting layers of activity within the auditorium.
